I’m Sarah Clements and I am a licenced Makaton Tutor based in Hastings, East Sussex. I work with adults with complex needs who use Makaton to communicate their everyday needs, thoughts and feelings. I'm passionate about Makaton and have seen first-hand how it can improve the quality of life for so many people. I love delivering training and I can provide a range of Makaton Workshops both online and in person across East Sussex.
Currently over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech. Makaton is used by children and adults with communication and learning difficulties in their everyday lives at home, at school and in the community around them. Families, friends, teachers and a wide range of professionals also use Makaton regularly, and awareness of Makaton as a means of communicating is growing.
Communication is one of the key areas rated by both the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Ofsted. In both the care and education sectors, Makaton-trained staff could be the difference between a 'Good' and an 'Outstanding' rating.
A care home in North Yorkshire was praised by CQC and received an 'Outstanding' rating for setting up a Makaton choir to boost communication between the staff and the people they care for. CQC were impressed by the way the home had enthusiastically embraced Makaton and used it throughout the service in a fun and interactive way.
If you want to learn Makaton to use at home or at work, or just want to learn a new skill, Makaton training is suitable for parents, carers and professionals alike.
The great thing about Makaton is that it's easy to learn and you can start using it straight away! Workshops are informative, interactive, engaging and lots of fun.
