Makaton Frontline Workshops

Person-centred communication for professionals

Makaton has developed and launched a range of new Workshops that will enable professionals to communicate effectively with Makaton Users in specific settings and situations. There are five Frontline Workshops available:

  • General Wellbeing
  • Emergency Services
  • District Nursing*
  • Learning Disability Team*
  • Dentistry*

These Workshops are essential for all frontline staff who need to communicate in an inclusive way with everyone in the community.

*At present I can only deliver the General Wellbeing and Emergency Services Workshops. Please contact visit www.makaton.org or email the Makaton Charity on help@makaton.org to enquire about the District Nursing, Learning Disability Team and Dentistry Workshops.

Workshop Content

Frontline Workshops have been designed to equip participants with the skills to utilise Makaton effectively in a variety of work settings. All workshops contain three hours of training content and provide an understanding of learning disabilities and communication needs. Frontline Workshops offer two essential vocabulary sets to enhance your Makaton capabilities:

Everyday Vocabulary:
This set of 36 concepts is crafted to give participants a solid foundation in Makaton, covering verbs, adjectives, and nouns, thus enabling attendees to seamlessly integrate both signs and symbols right from the start.

Bespoke Vocabulary:
Specifically curated for Frontline Workshops, this set introduces 46 concepts directly relevant to the specific Workshop (see five different Workshops listed above).

Workshop Key Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Grasp the key goals and benefits of using Makaton
  • Be adept at applying Makaton with symbols, signs, and speech, drawing from the Everyday Vocabulary
  • Skilfully use specialised vocabulary sets tailored to Emergency Services/District Nursing/Learning Disability Team/Dentistry/General Wellbeing through symbols and signs, adaptable to various scenarios and settings
  • Know where to find further information, pursue additional training, and access important resources, including information on the Makaton Friendly Scheme and Membership
